Stean Barrie

General Manager Technical Services

Stean was appointed General Manager Technical Services in 2015, providing support to operations at both Leonora and Simberi. Stean was previously General Manager Gold Ridge Operations from 2013 until Gold Ridge was sold in May 2015.
 
Stean joined St Barbara in 2008 to assist in the re-commissioning and start-up of the Gwalia Mill, and has subsequently held various managerial roles including Manager Processing at Gwalia, Manager Mining and Acting General Manager at Marvel Loch.

Before joining St Barbara, Stean completed Managerial training with Anglogold-Ashanti working up to Process Manager level.  Stean also gained exposure to project execution working with firms providing engineering solutions to the mining industry. Stean has experience working in diverse environments as West Africa, Southern Africa, Australia and the Pacific and has been exposed to commodities including gold, uranium, diamonds and iron ore.

Kous Kirsten

B.Eng (Mining)

General Manager Leonora Operations

Kous was appointed General Manager - Leonora Operations in 2012. Kous leads the Leonora team in meeting safety, environment and production objectives and maximising the return on assets.

Prior to taking up his current role, Kous was the Company’s General Manager - Southern Cross Operations.  Kous joined the Company in 2007 to build internal capability in respect of technical systems and processes across Operations. Kous's prior roles have included Manager Mining Open Pits, Acting Manager Mining Gwalia and Principal Mining Engineer Operations.

Before joining St Barbara, Kous held technical and operational management roles with Anglogold-Ashanti. He has over 25 years of mining experience encompassing ultra deep underground mining in South Africa and open cut operations in various countries in Africa, with responsibilities ranging from strong operational contexts to pure technical roles.

Tim Richards

B. Eng Mining (Hons)

General Manager Simberi Operations

Tim Richards was appointed General Manager - Simberi Operations in December 2013. Tim leads the Simberi Island based team, working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure safety, environment, community and production objectives are achieved and maximising the return on assets at Simberi.

Tim was most recently General Manager at the Amulsar Project in Southern Armenia and has extensive mining experience both in Australia and in the expatriate environment across Europe,  Africa, and the Caucasus. He has broad experience in open pit mining ranging from scoping and feasibility studies, site technical services, through to operations and mine management.

Rowan Cole

Company Secretary

Rowan joined St Barbara in 2010 as General Manager Corporate Services and was appointed as Deputy Company Secretary in 2012 and as Company Secretary in 2014.

He has 30 years' experience across chartered accounting, retail banking, private and public companies. Mr Cole's experience includes external, internal and IT audit, risk management, customer service delivery, marketing, strategy formulation, execution and measurement, process and business improvement, financial and business reporting in senior roles including general manager, head of risk and compliance, chief audit executive and chief financial and risk officer.

Dr Roger Mustard

B.Sc Hons (Geology), PhD, FAusIMM, FAIG, FSEG

General Manager Exploration

Roger joined St Barbara in 2013 and is responsible for leading the exploration activity to grow the Company's resource base through discovery at Simberi (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.

Roger has 25 years experience in the resource industry having worked in technical, research, planning and management roles for Dominion Mining, Ross Mining, Auzex Resources and Oceana Gold.

Roger has extensive experience working on epithermal, mesothermal, porphyry, intrusion related and IOCG (iron oxide copper gold) deposits in diverse environments across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and has been exposed to a range commodities including gold, silver, tin, tungsten, molybdenum and copper.

Val Madsen

General Manager Human Resources

Val joined St Barbara in September 2013. Val is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and leads the Human Resources Function which includes recruitment, remuneration and benefits, talent management, learning and development and employee relations. 

Prior to joining St Barbara, Val worked for Newcrest Mining and has over 15 years’ experience in Human Resources.

Jeff Waddington

General Manager Health, Safety, Environment & Community

Jeff was appointed General Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Community in 2014.  Jeff joined St Barbara in 2007 as Senior Environmental Coordinator at Leonora Operations before moving to Perth, initially as Acting Manager, Environment and Rehabilitation, then Manager, Environment and Community.  He was then appointed General Manager, Environment and Community in 2012, before moving into his current role.

Jeff has over 16 years experience in the mining industry, primarily diamonds and gold.  Prior to joining St Barbara, Jeff spent two years as State Manager for Ecowise Environmental. He spent 24 years in the Western Australian State Public Service, commencing as an Hydrographer in 1972 before reaching the position of Manager, Water Resource Management in the Goldfields and Agricultural region of the (then) Water Authority of Western Australia. Jeff is a Fellow of Leadership WA and a Justice of the Peace.

Lucas Welsh

B.Com CA MBA

General Manager Finance & Procurement

After joining St Barbara in 2007, Lucas was appointed General Manager Finance in 2012, and absorbed the Procurement function into his role in 2015.  Lucas is responsible for the financial reporting, consolidated management reporting, consolidated budgeting and forecasting, procurement, internal audit, external audit, treasury, taxation, accounts payable and payroll functions.

A Chartered Accountant with over 15 years experience, Lucas previously worked at PwC in their Transaction Services department, before developing a Sarbanes-Oxley risk management compliance framework and tool set at WMC Resources.  Lucas’s experience has predominantly been in the resources sector, however, he has also provided financial due diligence services for oil and gas companies, electricity generators and network operators in Australia and China.  Since joining St Barbara, Lucas has built the finance function, and developed the financial systems and process across all areas of his responsibility, with a focus on control and process improvement.
