Energy Conversation

St Barbara is a signatory of the Australian Greenhouse Challenge Plus (GCP) as well as the Energy Efficiencies Opportunities (EEO) programs. These programs are administered by the Federal Department of Environment and Water Resources and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources; respectively.

The aim of the Greenhouse Challenge Plus program is the reduction of company greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while the focus of the EEO program is increasing energy efficiencies. In addition, the EEO requires companies to evaluate all opportunities for energy efficiency with a payback period of four years or less, as well as demonstrating adherence to key elements of the program, such as Leadership, People, Information, Decision-making and Communicating Outcomes.

A Co-operative Agreement between St Barbara and the Australian Greenhouse Office regarding the GCP was finalized in 2007 and lists key actions to be achieved by the Company to reduce its GHG emissions. The first annual GCP report outlining what actions and improvements St Barbara has undertaken to reduce its GHG emissions was submitted prior to the end of 2007.

During the 2008 reporting period, the first energy assessments will be undertaken to not only satisfy the requirements of the EEO program, but more importantly, formally identify areas across the Company where energy efficiencies can be gained.
